It’s official, we are running the 2015 Marine Corps Marathon for our first ever marathon!! I’m not sure if we are more excited about getting in on the first try, or nervous about running 26.2 miles.
The Marine Corps Marathon is one of the races on our bucket list, and since this year is the 40th anniversary we really wanted to try to run this race. We had originally tried to register for the 17.75k which has guaranteed access into the marathon, however it sold out in 7 minutes! Our only other option at this point was to put our names into the lottery system knowing we might not both get in. Then came the waiting game until lottery registration closed and the “winners” were emailed the congratulations email. The night before names were drawn, the Marathon Facebook page posted that emails would start being sent out around midnight… well there went any sleep I was going to get that night. Somehow I was able to sleep that night but woke up around 3:30AM and checked my email and saw I had an email. I was debating on if I wanted to open it then or not, or wait until I woke up at 5:30. I decided to open it and I’m so glad I did!! It was a congratulatory acceptance email that I would be running this fall. I immediately went and checked Cameron’s email as well since we were both wanting to run and neither of us wanted to run alone; and surprisingly he also had the good email! As I write this I am still shocked we both were able to get into this run this year. It will be a big accomplishment for both of us but it will also test us, as we have never ran this far before, hopefully it will lead to an exciting day come race day.
So now the training begins. Most first time marathon plans are 20 weeks long, however because we haven’t been running regularly we are going to start slowly training now. We will be posting weekly training recaps along the way and also look forward to hearing any tips from this race.
Are you running the Marine Corps Marathon this year? Have you run one in the past? What was your favorite part of the race?
